The overnight sync
Every night, Ten Points asks your MIS what is true and applies what it finds. There is nothing to approve and nobody to press go – which is only a comfortable arrangement because of what the sync is not allowed to do.
What a run does
Section titled “What a run does”Brings in new people. A child admitted yesterday is here this morning, in their form class, in their house.
Moves people between classes. By closing the old membership and opening a new one, rather than editing the old one – so last term’s reports still show last term’s class.
Archives whoever has left. They stop appearing in class lists. Nothing of theirs is deleted and nothing about their history is closed.
Leaves your locked fields alone. A name or a class you have locked is yours until you unlock it, however many times the MIS disagrees.
Reading the run history
Section titled “Reading the run history”Admin → Sync shows the last few nights, newest first, under Run history. Each status carries a word as well as a colour, so it reads the same to everybody.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Completed | The run finished and applied what it found. |
| Action may be required | The run finished, and found something only a person at your school can settle. |
| Not connected | There is no MIS connection yet. Nothing is running. |
Action may be required does not mean the run failed. It usually means a member of staff has no address in the MIS to invite, or a credential is coming up for renewal. The row says which.
A Monday morning check is: open Sync, read the top row, and go no further unless it is not green. Three runs happened over the weekend and you do not need to read them all.
What the sync will never touch
Section titled “What the sync will never touch”Your values, your houses, your plan settings, and every point ever awarded. The sync has no opinion about any of them. It does not delete people, and it will not overwrite a field you have locked.
If something of yours changed overnight and it was not one of the four things in What a run does, it was not the sync – and the record will say who it was. See Your school’s record.
Fixing something the MIS has wrong
Section titled “Fixing something the MIS has wrong”Lock the field. From then on it is yours, and the sync leaves it alone until you unlock it. This is the right tool for the child whose legal name and known name differ in a way your MIS cannot express, and the wrong tool for a typo that should simply be fixed in the MIS – a lock you forget about is a field that stops tracking reality.
Worth reviewing once a year, at the point where you would otherwise be wondering why one child’s form group is stubbornly wrong.
Connecting it in the first place
Section titled “Connecting it in the first place”Connecting a MIS is done by us rather than by you. Write to hello@tenpoints.io with the system you use and we will set it up with you.
It sits on our side because it is the one screen in the product where somebody picks a school they do not work at, and that does not belong beside the screens where a school decides who may sign in at its own.
